Calm in Crisis: A Survival Guide for Small Nonprofits
Toolkit

This toolkit is designed for small nonprofits or teams under 25 people, whose impact is big, but resources are small. Whether you are managing programs, fundraising, or overseeing operations, this toolkit will guide you step-by-step through crisis prevention, response, and recovery. Small organizations frequently juggle multiple roles. Managing a crisis can feel overwhelming when resources are limited, and time is short. This toolkit is intended to make crisis preparedness and response feel more manageable by providing actionable steps, templates, and resources that you can quickly adapt to your specific nonprofit. Think of this as your “grab-and-go” plan for navigating challenges.

Optimizing Data Outreach for Fiscal Health

Effective Marketing and Branding for HIV Services

Community-based organizations (CBOs) are integral to achieving the goal of Ending the HIV epidemic (EHE). Their familiarity with and location within communities disproportionately impacted by HIV allow these organizations to directly address determinants of health through formal and informal medical and social services. However, community awareness of these services is essential for their success, as well as for your CBO’s organizational sustainability. This webinar will discuss best practices for cost-effective marketing and branding, along with strategies for measuring the impact of these campaigns.

Budgeting Basics for Sound Fiscal Management

This webinar is designed to inform DC providers that sound fiscal management is critical for organizations to improve access to health care, advance health equity, and build healthy communities. A comprehensive, well-informed, and well-managed budget is foundational to sound fiscal management. This webinar will provide financial and non-financial managers with practical, easy-to-use information to develop and use budgets with the aim of sustaining and expanding HIV/AIDS services.

Faculty Spotlight

In recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, we would like to highlight a faculty member who brings expertise and experience to the intersection of HIV and mental health.

Gretchen Cruz Figueroa, PsyD - Mental Health Advocate for People with HIV

Gretchen Cruz Figueroa is the Director of Mental Health Services for the Special Immunology Services Ryan White Program at Children’s National Hospital (CNH) in Washington, DC. She has an academic appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor for Pediatrics, Psychology, and Behavioral Science at George Washington University. Dr. Cruz Figueroa provides mental health treatment and consultation for children, adolescents, and Young Adults living with HIV in the DMV area.

 

She is the co-founder and Co Director of the Spanish Emphasis Training Program (STEP) at CNH, created to develop formalized training activities for all CNH’s clinical psychology and neuropsychology trainees (externs, interns, and fellows) and behavioral health staff who are bilingual (English-Spanish) and wish to increase their confidence, competence, and comfort in serving Spanish speaking families throughout the hospital.

Prior to her work here, she was a staff psychologist at a community mental health setting in Los Angeles, CA, that specialized in the treatment of trauma in children, adolescents, and their families. She was also a part of the Crisis Team in this setting, providing crisis intervention to patients and delivering support to staff. Dr. Cruz Figueroa obtained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, PR. She completed her post-doctoral residency at Child and Family Guidance Center in Los Angeles, CA, where she specialized in trauma work and crisis intervention. 

Her expertise was featured by the Effi Barry Training Institute through the webinar The Intersection of Mental Health and HIV Among Youth. This resource highlights her insights on the complex emotional and psychological needs of youth living with HIV. The session supports broader efforts to integrate mental health into HIV care with a culturally responsive approach.

Awareness Days in May and June

  • May 18 – HIV Vaccine Awareness Day
    A day to thank volunteers and researchers working toward a preventive HIV vaccine and to raise public awareness about the critical need for ongoing trials.
  • May 19 – National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
    This day encourages culturally tailored outreach to reduce stigma and promote testing in AAPI communities. 
  • June 5 – HIV Long-Term Survivors Day
    A tribute to individuals who have been living with HIV for decades. It's a time to honor resilience and push for aging-friendly care and services.
  • June 27 – National HIV Testing Day
    Let’s amplify the importance of regular testing and early diagnosis. Use this day to share testing resources and increase visibility in your community.

Events in DC

World Pride 2025

2025 marks the 50th Anniversary of Pride celebrations in Washington, DC! The Capital Pride Alliance is excited for Washington, DC to host World Pride 2025 and share this momentous and exciting milestone with our international community.

World Pride is occurring at a crucial time, bringing together voices from around the world to support the LGBTQ+ community’s ongoing fight for equality, visibility, and justice. We encourage everyone in our global community to participate in this historic moment. By showing up and supporting Pride events globally, the LGBTQ+ community will be visible, vigilant, and heard.

Other local events focused on wellness include:

  • Women's Yoga FlowMay 31, 10am–12pm
    This wellness event creates space for women to explore holistic health practices and self-care strategies. Attendees may find sessions or resources on sexual health, including HIV awareness and prevention tools.
  • Ladies First: A Women’s World Pride Celebration (MLK Jr. Library DC) June 1, 1pm–5pm
    Celebrate Pride with a powerful women-centered event featuring art, education, and advocacy. The celebration may highlight health initiatives and community services, including HIV prevention resources tailored for women.

The Effi Barry Training Institute is dedicated to empowering current and prospective HAHSTA grantees and community-based organizations with the knowledge and tools to thrive. We offer targeted training and technical assistance across a variety of key areas. These include: 

  • Navigating the Fee-for-Service business process
  • Mastering foundational HIV service competencies
  • Advancing expertise in healthcare systems, data, and health informatics
  • Implementing high-impact prevention strategies (including biomedical models)
  • Integrating emerging evidence-based practices 

Our approach blends group-level training, hands-on boot camps, dynamic community forums, and tailored one-on-one consultations.

HealthHIV's capacity-building efforts are designed to help organizations enhance patient outcomes, drive efficiencies, and maintain long-term sustainability. Through our innovative approach, we build robust, sustainable systems and services that address every stage of the HIV care continuum.
